Hangups

Arm mod is a resounding success, sorry for the less-than-stellar-picture. It shows what it needs to, that’s enough for me. My decals are on backorder until August sometime, so this project is on hold until then. I’m not too happy about that…

On the upside, we’ve got the following on the way:

  • HGUC Kampfer
  • HGUC RX-78-2 30th Anniversary
  • Mystery high grade kit (even I don’t know what it is)
  • Mystery master grade kit (again, I don’t know what it will be)
  • MG Freedom Gundam (Extra Finish Version)

Projected Project- Sinanju Revisited

July 13, 2009 8 comments

Sinanju was one of my earliest MGs and one of the most time consuming that I’ve done yet. Being such an early model for me, there are a lot of things that I look at now (especially the decals) and feel I can do better. Not to mention the semi-gloss topcoat I used brought out all the spots where I used the GM red to hide clip marks, thus making things way worse. You can’t see it in pictures unless I purposefully take them like that or just looking at it, but I know it’s there.

So, I’ll be doing fixing it up! With no future gunpla projects coming my way (aside from a super-hawt 30th Anniversary RX-78 care of Robert and another project I haven’t even worked out 100%), I’ve decided that I’ll be going back and giving The Big Red Bastard some extra love, like it didn’t get enough to begin with. Planned so far-

  • Paint all red parts with Tamiya TS-50 Mica Blue
  • Paint all black parts with Tamiya TS-29 semi-gloss black
  • Paint the entire frame with Tamiya TS-38 gunmetal
  • use Tamiya X-11 Chrome Silver to redo the gold detail, this time using mr. masking sol or taking extra time with an alcohol-dipped toothpick to clean up. I’m also going to use the X-11 paint for the tubing.
  • Waterslide decals
  • Modify both forearms for better shield usage
  • Find a way to reinforce the weak wrists

Ambitious? Yeah. But I think it’ll be well worth the extra effort. By the by, does anyone know if Mr. mark setter has ill effects on paint?

I did get started to a degree tonight, stripping down Sinanju to just the frame and laying out all of the armor.

Only a few more things-

  • Made a Twitter account for the website so I can do quick updates
  • Added a Flickr account for brief WIP-updates
  • Finished Sword Impulse photos, started on Nu Gundam

Sadly, I’ll be gone tomorrow which means I won’t be able to get any more stuff done until later in the week.

…Double Oh!

While the 0 Raiser is still on the way, the 00 itself is finished. Overall I’m pleased with what I got out of this kit though I think in terms of engineering I prefer the detail and look of the Exia. The 00 is just very…plain. While the S1 kits weren’t as detailed as something like the Gundam OYW they did have a little bit of panel lining to spice things up. As you’ll see there isn’t much of that going on here with the 00.

Side by side with the Exia. Normally these two kits would be the same color-wise but after painting the 00 it wound up darker. Gotta say though, I’m kind of partial to how it turned out, though the parts I painted at first like the chest and shoulders are a bit sloppy when compared to the GN drives and the plates over the drive daggers. I used Tamiya flat blue/flat red for the body and feet, gold leaf for the v-fin and gunmetal for the joints. As you can see the Exia is an older kit I did, parts of it looking kind of sloppy now. If there’s one disappointment to be found with the 00′s design it’s the very anorexic legs and the lack of a chest orb. I found the orb to give all of the S1 suits a little bit of extra flavor that set them apart from other suits that we’ve seen recently and the S2 suits seem to be back to business as usual.

If there’s one thing that I did that turned out better on the Exia, it’s definitely the GN condensers. The gunmetal color I used (Model Master) definitely lent itself better to enhancing the shine of the metallic green gundam marker than the Tamiya brand did. Either that or it’s time to replace the metallic green as it’s not doing the ‘metallic’ part of it’s job any more. In this picture you can really see how tiny the 00′s legs are compared to Exia’s. They also lack the joint near the middle of the foot, something that I can’t figure out why they would get rid of.

GN Sword II. Simple weapons (Didn’t bother with rifle mode pictures, sorry) but they don’t look all that bad. This is about as dynamic as poses get with the 00 since the torso doesn’t turn much and the legs are somewhat restricted by the side skirt armor. This isn’t necessarily a bad thing though since it prevents the splits problem the Exia and Astraea kits had and as you can see it can still get in to some good positions.

00 also packs two beam sabers. Oddly the beams are now your standard UC kit beams instead of the small flat beams the original 00 kits were. They don’t really go in to the slots for the beams all that easily, so they’ll probably be staying on the back..

The twin drive system! The blades under the drives can pop off and be used as forearm mounted daggers or put together for a bladed shield. Personally I think they look better on the back but we’ll see if I can still use them once the 0 Raiser gets here.

Speaking of the twin drives, they have a good range of motion and are able to move up and down on the mounts as well as around so they’ll rarely if ever get in the way of posing.

All in all I’m okay with the kit itself, minor gripes aside. Were more parts available to me I’d be inclined to try to kitbash something together for some better waist movement and to spice up the legs a bit..but that’s something for farther down the line. As I mentioned in a comment on Rob’s blog, the lack of the GN Sword 3 and all of the different variations of this kit (I think there’s 3 or 4 now?) kind of bother me…but if we get an MG of the 00 or Exia I’ll probably pick either (or both!) up. I could count this little project as finished but since the 0 Raiser is still on the way this gets marked up as a WIP post.

Up next after the 00-Raiser is the RX-78-2 Gundam Ver. OYW, which I’ll be recoloring (by hand..again. Maybe I should buy an airbrush?) as my final practice run before I lay in to my big project. I thought about just leaving it be then realized I accidentally got the Game Color Ver., which has a more pastel color scheme than the animation version and I do not like it at all…so it’s off to the races.

A familiar suit…

All the supplies aren’t here yet…neither is the model.  But this is pretty much everything. I’ll give you one more update before I start work on this!

Wing Zero…

Wing Zero is confused by this quarter…

I’m just about done, sorry for the lack of WIP updates. I’m only two days in but I only have the battery/switch compartment, the armor for the left arm, wings and the weapons left to build. Thankfully, all the lights are working properly. I’m a bit confused as far as setting the switch up goes, if anyone is out there (Rob) I’d love an explaination and how the hell I tell one side from the other on the switch itself. I’m also pleased to note that the 8mm action base thing sits nicely on the bottom of the PG Zero, so I can play around with it and get it in most of it’s signature poses! Of course, I’ll probably use some blue-tac or something else to give it a little extra stick, just to be sure it stays put.

Paid for PG Red Frame (hello bonus parts!) today, so that might ship out and be here by the middle of next week. If not, end of next week. Either way, I’ll be done with Zero by then!

Perfect~!

PG Wing Zero shipped out today and ought to be here by the time I arrive home from work tomorrow! Either that or Thursday, it depends mostly on if UPS just makes the two hour trip here or breaks it up.

Excitement!

Various Updates

Updated the ‘Finished Projects’ page with links to photobucket albums of the models listed there. The finished models themselves will likely be on the last pages of the albums since I opted to upload the construction pictures as well.

Picking up the HD Hyaku-Shiki from the post office tomorrow (Apparently they just left the slip instead of even trying to knock on the door to drop it off. I can only figure this is because they didn’t want to leave a package with 100$ worth of items just sitting out) along with my three action bases. Expect more pictures to materialize in the aforementioned albums and an update here mentioning it sooner or later.

If I’m timing everything right (Gundam Store and More typically has my items to me in two days) then by the end of the week I’ll have the Zaku II and Zeta, assuming I miss the UPS fellow due to being at work with the God Gundam not far behind (the seller, the same one I bought my Hi-Nu from, is also pretty speedy) those two. Looks like I’ll be plenty busy until PG Red Frame ships out! I almost bought the 00/0-Raiser combination from HLJ in addition to all of this, but after looking at the model I decided I really really really am not fond of the way it looks. Not to mention I’m sure Bandai will release a version that comes with the GN Blade III sometime in the future, or possibly a Trans-AM EXF version that includes said sword. I’m still holding out for a Masurao or preferably a Susanoo 1/100 model, but so far it’s been nothing but fairly uninteresting suits for the season two models. I will say that I’d love to see a master grade release of the Exia or 00 (if they made it look less bland) since the current no grade 00 kits are able to do some excellent posing. Alas, who knows when or even if that will happen.

In other news, I am sick to death of this cold weather. I’m looking forward to spring and being able to open a window and enjoy a cool breeze!

Oh no!

I think we have a bit of a backlog now. Not as huge as some, but still.

  • HD Hyaku -Shiki
  • MSZ-006-3 Zeta Gundam
  • Black Trinity Zaku II Ver. 2.0
  • GF13-017JPII God Gundam
  • Astray Red Frame (I’m counting it since I’ve preordered it, okay?)

whoops!

Oops.

I’ve gone and ordered the MSZ-006-3 Zeta Gundam (Also known as White Unicorn Zeta, Amuro Ray’s unit). The ‘Limited Edition’ part swayed me, in addition to the desire to have something to sit opposite the Hyaku-Shiki.

Hopefully it’s the last gunpla I buy before PG Red Frame. :P You can expect me to start it some time next week.

Have you ever…

Had a rather poor day and found yourself buying something just to take your mind off things?

I suspect around Saturday or Monday next week a shiny new HD Color version of the MSN-00100 will be arriving at my door, along with three action bases (Unicorn and Sinanju versions and a black one). With the release of the PG Red Frame now back at the tail end of March I feel like I need another little project to keep me busy. I’m curious to see if it’s like the EXF versions that have been released (same molds, different colors) or if they’ve done anything new with the Hyaku Shiki that came out in March of 2001. Honestly, I’m expecting the kit to be the same as it’s 2001 counterpart (12-13 runners, POLYCAAAAAPS) but the Type-100 is so awesome it doesn’t matter much. 2001 molds confirmed, which I’m fine with.

If I wind up getting impatient then I can see myself ordering the Zeta gundam to go along with it. It’s getting to the point where I really should invest in a display case or something to keep these things in since I have a handful of models that are actually sitting in their boxes right now due to a lack of room.

Which makes me think…

I know a lot of people who build gunpla seem to wind up with a backlog of some sort of kits that need building, some more severe than others. What causes that? So far, the closest I’ve gotten to a backlog is when Sinanju and Unicorn arrived together. Is it just finding a good deal on some kits all within a short period of time, buying a bunch of suits that you like since you know you’re going to build them all eventually anyway or something else? I don’t think a backlog is necessarily a bad thing (at least you’ll be busy) but I can definitely see it playing a role in getting burned out quick when you have this pile of models sitting around unbuilt. So what’s the story, how did you end up with all those models sitting around waiting to be built?
